Director of Communications for the Equality and Human Rights Commission

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is seeking an exceptional Director of Communications to lead their communications function. As Britain’s national equality body and a United Nations accredited National Human Rights Institution, the EHRC protects and promotes equality and human rights across England, Scotland and Wales. It was set up by the Equality Act 2006 as a statutory non-departmental public body and operates independently of governments. It is an expert and authoritative organisation and is recognised as a centre of excellence for equality and human rights law, advice and analysis.

The EHRC has unique legal powers which it uses to challenge discrimination, tackle barriers to equality of opportunity and ensure that everyone can make the most of their rights. Its work is driven by a simple belief – if everyone gets a fair chance in life, we all thrive. It works in partnership with other organisations and individuals to achieve its aims, but is ready to take tough action against those who abuse the rights of others.

This is a high profile and pivotal role, which requires resilience, adaptability and proven communications experience at a senior level. The successful candidate will need to be able to work under pressure and to lead a team to deliver challenging objectives in a complex environment.

This individual will shape, lead and deliver the Commission’s communication strategy and is responsible for ensuring that the Commission creates and holds a clear and visible public space as the regulator of equality and human rights in Great Britain. A keen eye for risk is critical. You will identify and manage reputational risks and exercise judgement and political acumen. As the most senior communications adviser at the EHRC you will lead your team in providing expert communications advice to the CEO, Chair and the board.

You will have experience of both proactive and reactive communications and a demonstrable ability to mobilise a team to be universally excellent across all the disciplines of communications and stakeholder engagement. You will have the capability to grasp and translate complex,   politically sensitive issues at pace into high level, well evidenced and digestible communications. You will be adept at engaging with a diverse audience. You will have a thirst for innovation in communications delivery across all media.

We have offices in Cardiff, Glasgow, London and Manchester. The Commission is supportive of the Government’s levelling up agenda, and therefore in line with their places for growth agenda this role is only able to be based from our Cardiff, Glasgow or Manchester offices. Salary for this role is £71,000 - £85,000.
